DBs and Tools Access
The information below is provided to the students:
All themes involve practical work developing applications based on several Oracle databases and tools on the University's (and partner institution) servers. Each theme details how the databases tools are used in that theme. Other development tools are also used - these are detailed in each theme.
Oracle Databases
The Oracle databases are:
STUDENT4 and STUDENT5 - these are used by students taking the A&DD unit only.
STUDENT - the main database used by all students on all courses taking database units.
STUDENT3 - based in Germany and only used for the distributed databases theme.
Accounts
You have an account set up on STUDENT4 and this is the one you normally use. You also have accounts on STUDENT and STUDENT5 with exactly the same username and password as on STUDENT4.
Schema
The following schema, all of which are realistic databases, are available on STUDENT4 and are used by the themes:
OE - Order Entry (customers, orders, products etc)
HR - Human Resource
SH - Data warehouse corresponding to the OE database.
These schema are also available on STUDENT and STUDENT5 if STUDENT4 is temporarily unavailable. Please note that there may be minor differences in the implementation of these databases.
Further information on these schema is available at: http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14198/toc.htm
Access Privilegies
There are also smaller schema for the practice activities based on (but not the same as) these schema. These are:
1. SALESWH (a smaller version of SH and used in the OLAP cheme)
2. mysports (a smaller version of OE used in the OLAP and data mining themes)
Access from SQL Developer
This is available on the student network (on the desktop, and via the menu "Specialist Applications - Technology - Oracle Developer Suite"), and can also be freely downloaded from: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/sql_developer/index.html
The connection information is as follows:
STUDENT4:
Hostname - wallace2
Port - 1521
SID - student4
STUDENT:
Hostname - preston3
Port - 1521
SID - academic
STUDENT5:
Hostname - wallace2
Port - 1521
SID - student5
When you use SQL Developer on the student network for the first time, you should export (right click on "Connections") your settings to an xml file named and located in your own private folder of your choice. You should then simply import these settings each time you use SQL Developer. The connections will be stored in a local "connections.xml" file if you are using your own copy of SQL Developer.
It is currently not possible to access the Oracle databases from outside using SQLDeveloper (refer below).
Access from iSQLPlus
Be aware that access to STUDENT, STUDENT4 and STUDENT5 is via different client. The iSQLPlus links are in the unit in myCourse.
Access to APEX
Information about access to your workspace etc is provided in the "Access to APEX" link in the theme block.
Access from Outside the University
Currently, it is only possible to access:
1. STUDENT from iSQLPlus
2. APEX
You will need to enter your network ID and password first before reaching the iSQLPlus and APEX authentication screens.
