Distributed Databases - Narrative

Links to the essential reading, resources, activities, databases, advanced topic forum and assessment upload referred to in this narrative are in the theme block in myCourse.

Distributed databases are increasingly important for satisfying more flexible business access needs and within the context of distributed systems generally. Distributed and replicated concepts, theory and design approaches will be examined, together with access and connectivity techniques including database naming and links. Issues such as transparency in a distributed environment and distributed transaction management will also be examined. The essential reading for this theme is Elmasri - Distributed Databases and Client-Server Architecture - Ch.24

We will start by working through a Distributed Database "self-test" and practical activity. We will use an international HR distributed database, implemented in Oracle with one site in Germany, to develop practical skills in using distributed databases. Oracle now has substantial distributed database functionality, and so "Tuning Distributed Queries" is the advanced topic and forum for this theme.

The assessed activity includes developing a transparent distributed view of HR employees and a distributed database design for both the HR and OE databases.

The advanced topic and forum for this theme is "Tuning Distributed Queries".
