The Fastest Man On Earth
Wing Commander Andy Green is a Royal Air Force fighter pilot and holder of the World Land Speed Record. He is 'The Fastest Man on Earth', and will attempt to break the record again in the new BLOODHOUND SuperSonic Car, which aims to exceed 1000 mph. This project is linked to a major education programme in schools across the country, which aims to inspire the next generation of young engineers and scientists, while setting the most remarkable Land Speed Record of all time.
Biography
Andy Green was educated at St Olave's Grammar School and then gained an RAF scholarship to Worcester College, Oxford, where he graduated in 1983 with first class honours in mathematics. He qualified as a fighter pilot on F-4 Phantom and Tornado F3 aircraft, and later became Officer Commanding Operations Wing at RAF Wittering.
He was created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1997 New Year's Honours List. He was awarded the Segrave Trophy by the Royal Automobile Club in 1997. In 2006 he was awarded the John Cobb Trophy by the British Racing Drivers' Club for "a success of outstanding character" and an Honorary degree from Staffordshire University, July 2008. He is the current holder of the World Land speed record, and the first person to break the sound barrier on land.
