Travel
Both symposia take place on the Canterbury campus of the University of Kent.
All presentations and coffee breaks are in the School of Computing. The School of Computing is less than 10 minutes walk from the accommodation of Keynes College. Both breakfast (if you take B&B on campus) and most lunches will be in the Dolce Vita restaurant of Keynes College.
Overview
The campus guide leaflet provides both a map of the campus and brief travel advice.
Canterbury is about 1 hour by train from London. All London airports are reachable within 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Visitors from Paris or Brussels may also consider taking the Eurostar train through the channel tunnel.
Trains
For trains an (open) return ticket is generally far cheaper than two single tickets. So if you arrive and leave at the same airport, then you better buy an open return ticket. For train tickets in South-East England buying a ticket in advance on the internet is not cheaper and offers no convenience, because you would need to collect such a ticket at a ticket machine. Use the National Rail website to search for connections.
Train Stations
Canterbury has two train stations, Canterbury West and Canterbury East. They are on different train lines, that is, any train stops at only one of the stations. The fastest connection from London is St Pancras to Canterbury West. Canterbury West is also slightly more convenient for the University.
- Canterbury West Station: Take a taxi to the campus of the University of Kent. You may also take a bus, but note that they go less frequently because it is outside term time. You can also walk: coming out of the station go left along the road beyond the roundabout, until a cycle & footpath leads left underneath the rails. Follow the signs up to the university (20 minutes, uphill).
- Canterbury East Station: Take a taxi to the campus of the University of Kent. For a bus, follow the signs to the bus station (5 min).
Airports
- London City Airport (~1.5 hours): Take the DLR (Docklands light railway) to Stratford International. There take the Highspeed train to Canterbury West station.
- London Gatwick (~2-2.5 hours): Many different train connections, the cheapest even avoiding London. Best ask for next connections when buying the train ticket at the airport train station. The Gatwick Express is not necessarily the best option.
- London Luton (~2-2.5 hours): Buy train ticket at the airport. It includes first a short bus ride to Luton Parkway station. Take a train to St Pancras. From there take the highspeed train to Canterbury West.
- London Stansted (~2-2.5 hours): Buy train ticket at the airport. First take the train from Stansted to Tottenham Hale station. From there take the underground to St Pancras. Finally from St Pancras to Canterbury West.
- London Heathrow (~2.5 hours): Take the underground from Heathrow to St Pancras. From there the highspeed train to Canterbury West. Alternatively you can take the Heathrow Express from Heathrow to Paddington station and take the underground from Paddington to St Pancras. This may not be worth the cost and additional change.
Eurostar
If you take the Eurostar train from Paris or Brussels, try to leave it at Ashford, changing for a local train to Canterbury. If you travel further to Ebbsfleet or St Pancras, your train to Canterbury will first go back via Ashford on the same track that you just came before.
