Cygwin provides a Linux like environment for Windows™ and is installed using
setup.exe on the Cygwin home page.
The setup process offers you a choice
of components. Other than the Cygwin base, which you get by default,
you will need the following components to install and run Miranda:
- from [Devel] gcc - the gnu C compiler
- from [Editors] - it's usual to
have vi (choose vim) in a UNIX/Linux type environment and
you should also select joe which Cygwin-Miranda uses by default. You may also wish
to select nano (a public domain version of pico) another simple
editor with on-screen instructions
Keeping the setup.exe icon on your desktop allows you to add more components
to your Cygwin environment later.
When the setup is complete you will have a desktop icon and/or an entry in the Start
menu, by clicking/choosing which you can open a Cygwin command window, running bash.
The next task is to download and install Miranda.
Note that to avoid conflicting with
Cygwin license conditions the Miranda download does not include any executable binary.
You will create that
during the installation process.
