Year 11 students get a taste of computing
12 August 2013
A group of 37 year 11 students were given a taste of computer programming as part of their residential five day Summer School. The students from the University’s 18 Partner and KMPF (Kent and Medway Progression Federation) schools across Kent and Medway have been given the opportunity to experience university life first-hand, living on campus for the week and attending lectures and seminars.
As part of their week (5-9 August) on campus they had a computing taster session which involved programming and competing with Lego robots. The competition was based on the FIRST LEGO League, an international programme designed to bring science to life for school-children through themed activities, which includes a hands-on robot challenge. Within three hours the students learned how to program their LEGO robots, make modifications and complete a series of timed challenges.
The Summer School programme is part of the University¹s commitment to widening participation and outreach in the local region. Previous participants have found it invaluable in helping them to gain a better understanding of higher education and to make informed choices about their future.
