Tailoring a set of standard_style research group pages

Introduction

To make it easier for you to tailor the content of your set of standard_style Research Group Pages, Rbrgp actually builds each page from several "content files".

When you first use Rbrgp these files may already exist. If they do, they will contain a comment describing what sort of information should be contained in the file.

If the files do not exist, and you wish to use them, copy them from another research group's web directory (under

/web/cs/docs/research/groups/<research_group_directory_name>
) and edit accordingly. The
/web/cs/docs/research/groups/compint
research group is a good place to start.

In general, the files should be written in HTML unless only a simple paragraph is required.

Detail

Webpage Content file M/O Usage
index aims M Place the aims and objectives information which describes your research group in this file and then rebuild the page using Rbrgp.
You are limited to a maximum of 150 displayed words, so if you need to provide additional information, build separate webpages (using Rbargp) and provide links to these pages from within this section.
list_interests M Include only a list of research group interests, one per line. Keep each line as short as possible. Eg.

theory of programming language semantics
extending formal methods theory
state based notations
research_interests research_interests M Use this file to describe in detail all the research areas in which your group is interested in. There is no word count limit operating on this file. However, if you wish to provide links to further information create those additional pages using the Rbargp utility.
membership membership/interests.<login> O Include a brief description of research areas that interest you. This information is listed next to your name on the group membership page. Try not to exceed about 4 lines of displayed text.
grants grants O Place information about any grants held by members of your research group in this file and then rebuild the page using the Rbrgp build utility. If the grants file is present, the group index page will provide a link to it once the Rbrgp utility is run. If the grants file is absent, there is no link from the index page once the Rbrgp utility is run.
events/index events/news O Place information about conferences, visits etc. in this file but do not include too much detail. This section is limited to a maximum of 150 displayed words. To include this content into the 'News and Seminars' webpage, re-build the webpage using the Rbrgp utility. Note: this file is optional; you do not have to provide any news!
You can provide links from this section to additional webpages containing more detailed information. You should use the Rbargp build program to build additional pages. If a 'news' file is not provided, that section is omitted from the page.
events/seminars O Include details of all your group seminars in this file. You are advised to adopt the system described below to list seminars. This will ensure a consistent look and feel across all the seminar webpages in the department. It is quite straight forward to do if you keep to the following instructions:

a. Create an index entry file for the new seminar. To do this, take a copy of the Seminar Index Entry Skeleton file and modify it, for example
cp seminarIndexEntry.skeleton <myfilename>
eg.
cp seminarIndexEntry.skeleton seminar.2001.03.25
and edit the file by ONLY REPLACING CAPITALISED TEXT with the relevant information. When choosing the <myfilename>, it is very useful to have it incorporate the date of the event, eg.
seminar.2001.03.25
If you do not intend to provide a link to further information, you must delete the Further Information link contained in this file.
If you do intend to include a link to further information, you will need to include the relevant Further Information webpage filename.

b. Include the newly created index entry file in the 'seminars' file. For example, include the line
#include "seminar.2001.03.25"
(Don't forget the double quotes.)

c. Re-build the 'News and Seminars' webpage to incorporate the new seminar details using the Rbrgp build utility. Seminars are listed in the order you #include them in the 'seminars' file.
